Lettre ouverte à l’initiative du mouvement européen pour l’eau bien commun, aux multinationales (dont SUEZ) pour les dissuader de faire main basse sur le service public de l’eau de Thessalonique en Grèce.

« La presse rapporte que votre compagnie participe actuellement à une offre d’achat sur Eyath, la compagnie de distribution et de traitement des eaux de Thessalonique.

Nous vous demandons de retirer votre offre.

Vous êtes sûrement conscient que la privatisation d’Eyath rencontre une forte opposition de la part des citoyens de cette agglomération, des travailleurs, ainsi que des municipalités de l’agglomération de Thessalonique.

La seule raison pour laquelle cette privatisation est en cours est qu’elle est imposée par le gouvernement grec, lui-même sous la pression de la Troïka, pour réduire la dette grecque. Il n’y a rien de noble à profiter de cette privatisation pour vous-même et votre compagnie. La population de Thessalonique, soutenue par de nombreux groupes, s’inquiète de vous voir poursuivre ainsi les profits aux dépens des travailleurs et des citoyens.

Comme ailleurs, vous aurez à faire face à une opposition à long terme, tant à Thessalonique que dans la Grèce entière et dans le reste du monde. Ces luttes sont bien documentées. Les compagnies qui s’engagent dans ces privatisations voient leurs réputations se ternir, leur crédibilité tomber en lambeaux, leurs risques sont accrus et leurs profits, limités.

Nous pensons en effet que votre offre est basée sur une piètre analyse de rentabilité.

Nous souhaiterions qu’aujourd’hui les entreprises privées ne basent pas leur modèle commercial sur l’opportunisme, ni ne s’aventurent dans des initiatives où elles ne sont manifestement pas les bienvenues.

Une alternative à votre offre est portée par les travailleurs d’Eyath, par la population de Thessalonique et les municipalités de cette agglomération et nous-mêmes. Celle-ci s’attache à maintenir l’eau dans le domaine public et à assurer le maintien d’un service de haute qualité. Cette alternative s’appuie sur le fait que l’eau est un bien commun, que l’accès à l’eau et à l’assainissement a été reconnu comme un droit humain fondamental par le Conseil des Nations unies en 2010, et sur le succès rencontré par l’initiative citoyenne européenne L’eau est un droit humain.

Aussi, nous vous demandons de retirer votre offre et de laisser les citoyens de Thessalonique décider par eux-mêmes du futur d’Eyath. »
